- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. The exotic field brome (Bromus arvensis) has only recently been established as a valid species distinct from Japanese brome (Bromus japonicus); see FNA, POWO, iNaturalist. As a result, the distribution of B. arvensis in the Watershed cannot be determined. Even iNaturalist, for instance, does not show any occurrences for the entire state of Colorado. The species, however, can be presumed present in the Watershed. Unhelpfully, BONAP subsumes B. japonicus under B. arvensis, and for the later shows all Watershed counties. The salient differences between the two species: height (B. japonicus, culm 30-70 cm; B. arvensis, culm 80-110 cm); anther length (B. japonicus, 1-1.5 mm; B. arvensis, 2.5-5 mm); lower glume (B. japonicus, usually 5-veined; B. arvensis, 3-veined). POWO shows both species spread to all states of the USA. Note that B. arvensis is a quite variable species. POWO lists 70 synonyms.
