- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Only one voucher exists for spike oatgrass from the Watershed, collected near a ridgeline at 12,100', near La Garita Creek (Saguache Co, 1984). In the USA, Helictochloa hookeri (ofteb under the name Avenula hookeri) is found in Montana and North Dakota, with a southern spur running down the Rockies through central Colorado into Taos county of New Mexico, where it is rarely collected. The few Colorado and New Mexico occurrences are the only known ones from the Rio Grande drainage. The many generic names proposed for this taxon show the difficuty taxonomists have had in dealing with it. Helictochloa is POWO's current treatment.
