- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Chestnut rush has been vouchered only twice from the Watershed: at the head of Saguache Creek (12,500', Saguache Co, 1968), and at the head of Duling Creek (11,450', Costilla Co, 1987). These locations fit the habitat of Juncus castaneus, which is wet tundra or subalpine ground. The species is circumboreal, with a southern extension in the USA that follows the Rockies down to New Mexico. In that state, J. castaneus has been collected only from high elevations in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains (Allred et al, 2020).
