- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. In the Watershed, spreading wheatgrass is one of the most widespread of grasses at the subalpine and alpine zones. it has been vouchered at the summit of peaks from all mountain ranges, east and west. Elymus scribneri can be found in rocky clefts on down to the subalpine, and occasionally to the montane (e.g., rhyolite cliffs along the Conejos River south of Platoro (Conejos Co, 1965). The USA distribution is similar locations in all Western states. The species follows the Rio Grande drainage through most of New Mexico, at locations usually above 9,000' (Allred et al, 2020).
