Comments
Streambank wheatgrass, perennial and cool-season, has been vouchered on both sides of the Valley with modest regularity, usually in the montane on loose or sandy soil. Sometimes Elymus lanceolatus is associated with pinyon-juniper, sometimes with the edge of ponds or lakes. Currently (2025) it lines the roadside of Hwy 160 between Alamosa and South Fork, growing in competition with Meliotus officinalis). From a distance it can be recognized by its light green color, almost lime. E. elymus seed has been used in land restoration mixes. The USA distribution is all states west of the Great Plains. The species follows the Rio Grande drainage through New Mexico but not into Texas.
