- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Baker's wheatgrass, perennial and cool-season, has been recorded from the montane to the alpine in both east and west mountain ranges of the Watershed, although not from the Culebras. Elymus bakeri is a variable species growing in variable habitats, from open aspen woodland to bare alpine slopes. Note that the species is difficult to tell from E. scribneri, and that th two are sympatric in the alpine. Also note that Allred et al. (2020) say "Elymus bakeri" is a "catch-all name" for a group of hybrid derivatives between E. trachycaulus and other species such as E. scribneri, E. elymoides, and E. canadensis (all present in the Watershed). What has been determined as Elymus bakeri has a USA range restricted to Colorado and New Mexico, with on isolated population in northern Arizona. It follows the Rio Grande drainage, spottily, through New Mexico but not into Texas.
