- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Foxtail barley has been recorded in the Watershed from the two basins, and from the foothills through the montane in the west-side ranges but not in the east-side. Hordeum jubulatum tolerates alkaline conditions and adapts to disturbed mesic ground, for instance the sandy bank of a reservoir, along a railroad right of way, in irrigated meadows, etc. According to Shaw (2008) the species has poor grazing value, since the awn can damage the faces of animals. Its USA distribution is extensive, common and native in all Western states, the Great Plains, and the upper mid-West, and adventive eastward around the Great Lakes and in New England. It follows the Rio Grande drainage completely through New Mexico to the western tip of Texas.
