- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Meadow barley has been vouchered from the Watershed many times, but all from the western mountain ranges. Hordeum brachyantherum is usually found in mesic conditions: drainage of meadows, pond and creek sides, seeps in conifer forests, etc. It also takes water advantage of road sides. The species is common and wide spread over all USA Western states. It follows the Rio Grande drainage half way through New Mexico but no farther down stream
