- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. New Mexican feathergrass has been vouchered from only three locations: the San Luis Hills (Conejos Co, 1999), on a butte just south of Limekiln Peak east of Del Norte (Rio Grande Co, 1999), and on Limekiln Peak itself (Rio Grande Co, 2004). The last two locations (but not the first) are associated with limestone, a substrate often connected with Hesperostipa neomexicana (Allred et al, 2020). The species is easy to recognize, with its long plumose curling awns. The center of the USA distribution of H. neomexicana is Arizona and New Mexico, with occurrences in contingent areas of Nevada, Utah, Colorado, and Texas. The species follows the Rio Grande drainage to the Big Bend region of Texas.
