- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Fowl bluegrass has been collected and determined as such less than twenty times in the Watershed, from all mountain ranges except for the Culebras. Shaw (2008) calls Poa palustris "A very variable species that is often difficult to identify," so determinations—especially from the basin and tundra—need confirmation. The usual habitat is mesic meadows and forest openings at mid-elevation. The USA distribution is extensive, covering all states except for the lower Great Plains, Texas, and the Deep South. The species follows the Rio Grande drainage through the northern third of New Mexico but no farther down stream. This world-wide species has been used for forage, revegetation, and erosion control.
