Comments
The introduced annual bluegrass has been vouchered less than ten times from the Watershed, all from the west side of the Valley. (Collectors may have been passing by a species they know is introduced.) Mainly the habitat of Poa annua is along trails and streams, suggesting naturalization of a grass that also invades lawns and golf courses. Poa annual may act as an annual or a perennial. Of Eurasian origin, this cool-season grass has spread to every state of the USA. It follows the Rio Grande drainage through New Mexico, with uncommon occurrences on down Texas to the Gulf of Mexico. Note that the species is known to hybridize, in particular with two Watershed species, Poa pratensis and Poa glauca. The plant in photorecords here (Rio Grande Co, Del Norte, 2025) may be a hybrid. Poa annua is the only Poa species recorded from the Watershed that is sometimes annual.
