- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Rocky Mountain fescue has been vouchered from all mountain ranges of the Watershed. Festuca saximontana is fairly common in timbered grasslands and openings, providing forage for wildlife and summer livestock. The USA distribution is all states west of the Great Plains, of the northern Great Plains, and of the Great Lakes region. The species follows the Rio Grande drainage through New Mexico but not farther down stream
