- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Alpine fescue is very common and often vouchered from the Watershed. It grows on tundra meadows and grassy slopes in all mountain regions, east and west. The only variety in the Watershed is Festuca brachyphylla subsp. coloradensis. In like habitat, the species is found in all USA states west of the Great Plains. It runs down the Rio Grande drainage through New Mexico but not into Texas.
