- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. In the Watershed tufted hairgrass ranges from basin to alpine, with most collections coming from the west-side mountain ranges. Deschampsia cespitosa is common in montane mesic meadows and provides forage or all kinds of wildlife. The USA distribution is all Western states, with location near the Canadian border stretching from the Great Plains to Maine. The species follows the Rio Grande drainage down to the Mexican border but not into Texas.
