NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Cultivated oats sometimes escapes and can be found near oat fields in ditches, road sides, railroad embankments, etc. In the Watershed, it has been vouchered from the Upper and Lower Basins less than ten times. Note that the records from McIntyre Ridge a little northeast of the town of Saguaches (Saguache Co, 1999) are not accepted by Shaw (2008). Avena sativa escapes are recorded from all USA states. They follow the Rio Grande drainage through New Mexico and, spottily, through Texas to the Gulf of Mexico. Note that Avena sativa and A. fatua hybrids sometimes form a considerable portion of oat fields.
