- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Short-awn foxtail has been vouchered fairly often from the Watershed, at a wide range of elevations. Alopecurus aequalis grows near water—pond and lake margins, marshes, ditches, etc. It can survive for weeks standing in water during the rainy seasons. In the USA, the species is common in all Western states and across the northern third of the country. It follows the Rio Grande drainage through New Mexico but not into Texas. Note that the plant has diuretic properties for humans.
