- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Rough bentgrass has been the most vouchered Agrostis from the Watershed, collected from the foothills to the subalpine in all mountains ranges. Agrostis scabra grows on rocky slopes, in meadows and forest openings, among rock fells, etc. It is one of the first grasses to reseed after a fire, and the panicles can break at the base and become a tumbleweed. The species is common in all Western states and across the northern third of the USA. It follows the Rio Grande drainage through New Mexico, with only a scattering of locations in the western tip of Texas.
