- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Spike bentgrass has less than ten vouchered locations from the Watershed, almost all of them in the south San Juans. The exceptions are Hot Springs Canyon in the north Cristos (Saguache Co, 2008), near Bonanza (Saguache Co, 2023), and La Garita Creek (Saguache Co, 1939). The habitat is usually moist montane meadows, occasionally in volcanic substrate, and once along a road side, perhaps taking advantage of a wet ditch. Agrostis exarata provides good forage for deer and elk. The species is wide spread in all Western states, and follows the Rio Grande drainage down through New Mexico to the Big Bend region of Texas.
