- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Nodding brome has been collected often from the Watershed, but almost always from the western mountain ranges. The exceptions are an occurrence near Zapata Falls south of the Great Sand Dunes (1998), another along Willow Lake trail east of Crestone (1999), a third near North Rock Creek east of Alder (1998). In the eastern San Juans, Bromus porteri is fairly common on open slopes, forested opening, stream sides, and aspen groves, typically in the montane. The species ranges through the desert Southwest, the Intermountain region, and the Rockies from Canadian to Mexican borders. It follows the Rio Grande drainage almost to the border with Mexico, with one uncommon occurrence in the Big Bend region of Texas.
