- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Little bluestem is little represented in the Watershed, with only three vouchers: one near Limekiln Peak between Del Norte and Monte Vista (Rio Grande Co, 1984), one on a flat slope near the road to the Rio Grande county landfill, between Del Norte and Monte Vista (1999),and one on a rocky knob in the San Luis Hills (Conejos Co, 1999). The paucity of observations is a little puzzling, since Schizachyrium scoparium is a signature plant of tall prairie grasslands and, for instance, is found in every county of New Mexico. Its USA distribution covers all states except for Oregon, California, and Nevada. It follows the Rio Grande drainage through New Mexico and Texas to the Gulf of Mexico.
