- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Timber oatgrass has been collected from the Watershed from all mountain regions, usually in subalpine meadows and forest openings. Danthonia intermedia also extends up into the alpine and down into the montane (e.g., near Creede, Mineral Co). It tolerates summer grazing better than some other grasses. Reproduction can be cleistogamous, that is, self-pollinating, perhaps promoting its spread at higher altitudes. D. intermedia is circumboreal. Its USA distribution covers all the Western states and the Great Lakes region. It follows the Rio Grande drainage only a couple of counties into New Mexico.
