- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Spiked dropseed is established in the Watershed, although not commonly collected, in Upper Basin sandy soil from the Blanca Wetlands on up to the Baca National Wildlife Refuge. Sporobolus contractus is a common grass of the desert Southwest and New Mexico, where it follows the Rio Grande drainage solidly from north to south and continues on down to the Big Bend country of Texas.
