- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Blue joint, which can reach up to five feet tall, is common around the Watershed, growing in wet habitats in all mountain regions at the montane and subalpine. Calamagrostis canadensis is a tough and resilient plant that sometimes out-competes other plants during reforesting. As with other Calamagrostis species, a clue to determination is the emergence of the awn from the back or middle of the lemma. The USA distribution is all states except for Texas and the Deep South. Bluejoint follows the Rio Grande drainage only about half way down New Mexico.
