Comments
In the Watershed ring muhly has been recorded fairly frequently. Typically it grows on sandy soils in the Upper Basin and Lower Basin, but it can reach up into the pinyon-juniper vegetative zone on dry and sometimes volcanic slopes (e.g., west of the town of Saguache). In the Watershed Muhlenbergia torreyi is more common than M. pungens and can be easily mistaken for it, since both can grow into a ring shape over time. (M. torreyi does not have the well developed rhizomes or the pungent smell of M. pungens.) The USA distribution of M. torreyi is centered in three states: Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico, where it follows the Rio Grande drainage down through the state and on into the Big Bend region of Texas, but not farther down stream.
