- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Slimstem muhly has been vouchered often, but only from the west side of the Valley. This is not surprising since Muhlenbergia filiculmis prefers volcanic substrate. It has most often been observed, for instance, from Creede to Wagon Wheel Gap (Mineral Co). The species is difficult to tell from Muhlenbergia montana. In the USA, M. filiculmis is restricted to five states: Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico, where it follow the Rio Grande drainage only as far as Rio Arriba Co.
