NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Short muhly is just that, typically only about three to four inches high. In the Watershed, Muhlenbergia brevis grows in shallow volcanic soil on rocky slopes and dry woodland. The one location in the Lower Basin was in the San Luis Hills (Conejos Co, 1999). The USA distribution is Arizona and southwestern New Mexico. The species occurs in the Rio Grande drainage only in a scattered way through New Mexico, with an isolatd population in the Jeff Mountains of Davis County, Texas.
