- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Scratchgrass is fairly common at the lower elevations of the Watershed, especially in alkaline or saline flats and in ditches and along roads. Other habitats are damp ground by ponds and in the floodplain of streams (especially the Rio Grande). Sometimes in towns Muhlenbergia asperifolia appears by streets that have been salted during the winter. In the USA the species is common in all the Western states, somewhat less wide spread in the Great Plains. It follows the Rio Grande drainage through New Mexico to the Big Bend region of Texas, no father down stream
