The only support that hairy grama is present in the Watershed has been the selection of Conejos Co in the distributions of Shaw (2008) and BONAP (2025). However, recently the photorecord of Anders Hastings in iNaturalist (observation #13366746, 4 Aug 2022) documents Bouteloua hirsuta three km east of the Tashi Gomang Stupa south of Crestone. The species should be looked for elsewhere in the Upper and Lower Basins. In Colorado it is recorded from both east and west of the Watershed, and in New Mexico from all the counties that border Colorado. The USA distribution is the desert Southwest, the Front Range of Wyoming and Colorado, the upper mid-West, and the Great Plains including all of Texas. B. hirsuta follows the Rio Grande drainage solidly all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. Note that B. gracilis and B. hirsuta differ by the bare extension of the rachis in B. hirsuta.
