- Comments
- In the Watershed, American slough grass follows a number of creeks and rivers, on both sides of the Valley: Sangre de Cristo Creek, Carnero Creek, Saguache Creek, and the Rio Grande at least as far as Wagon Wheel Gap. It also can be found in ditches, alongside ponds, by any seasonal standing water. Beckmannia syzigachne is a grass of the USA West and northern Great Plains. It follows the Rio Grande about halfway through New Mexico and is not found farther down stream. The specific epithet refers to the glumes that remain joined (Gr. syzygos) even when the entire spike falls. The grain provides excellent forage for wildlife.
