- There are no vouchers for New Mexican ground-cherry in the Watershed. But in 2022 Physalis neomexicana was twice photographed from around Penitente Canyon (Saguache Co), about a mile apart, 17 Aug and 21 Nov. Both observations were plants beside hiking trails, so possibly disseminated by human traffic. See iNaturalist observation #132629186 and #244320397. The photorecords would add Saguache to counties indicated in Ackerfield (2022) and BONAP (2024). The USA distribution for this taxon is roughly eastern Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona. It follows the Rio Grande of New Mexico through counties bordering Colorado down to the Mexican border, with a few occurrences in extreme southwest Texas. The species, Physalis neomexicana, is accepted by POWO, Ackerfield (2022), and Allred et al. (2022), but not BONAP (2024), which sticks with the traditional P. subulata var. neomexicana.
