NEED IN SITU PHOTO The Watershed has two clear records of Argemone polyanthemos: one dating from 4 Oct 1979 found near Cat Creek in Rio Grande Co, 12 miles south and 6 miles west of Monte Vista; the second dating from 3 July 2008 found in Alamosa Co along the road to Zapata Falls (iNaturalist observation #102009147). Note that iNaturalist also has a photorecord of Argemone sp. near the top of Mosca Pass in Alamosa Co (observation #127875325), although the elevation of over 10,000' far exceeds the range given in Ackerfield. So, along with other species of Argemone, crested prickly poppy is largely absent from the Watershed, although it is very common to the east in Fremont and Custer counties. The species follows the Rio Grande drainage in New Mexico from Taos Co to the border with Mexico—and on down the Rio Grande to the Big Bend country. The USA distribution covers all off the Great Plains and, in a scattered fashion, most o the desert Southwest.
