- Carpet phlox has one observation from the Watershed, by Patrick Alexander, found in the San Luis Hills, on Flattop Mesa, 7.3 air miles southeast of Sanford (Conejos Co, 2022). This record would be the only occurrence in the entire Rio Grande drainage. Its scarce presence in the Watershed is reasonable, since (along with one 1998 occurrence in Las Animas Co) it marks the southeasternmost reach of the USA distribution, which runs down the Rockies of Montana, Wyoming, and central Colorado, as well as the Front Range and western Plains of North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas, and Colorado.
