- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Probably Scotch thistle is a newcomer to the Valley. SEINet and iNaturalist show no observations of Onopordom acanthium from the Watershed, but both Ackerfield (2022) and BONAP (2022) indicate a presence in Costilla Co. BONAP also shows a presence in the Rio Grande drainage of New Mexico from Taos down through Socorro counties, but no farther down stream. Allred et al. (2020) say the species is "a relatively new arrival into New Mexico." The earliest date from these Rio Grande drainage counties is 2006, the latest is July 2021, from Tes Piedras (iNaturalist, observation 89271892). The US distribution covers solidly all states west of the Plains with a scattering of occurrences east of there. So more occurrences of Scotch thistle is to be expected in the Watershed.
