- Grindelia hirsutula is an extremely variable species, prone to hybridization, and determination of a plant is risky business. According to FNA, in the past taxonomists have generated up to 30 "facies" that entered into variety, subspecies, or species status. Experts continue to disagree. For instance FNA shows "Grindelia hirsutula" in most USA states, including all Western states, whereas BONAP restricts it to coastal California. According to SEINet, there have been seven observations of Grindelia hirsutula, so named, in the Watershed, from all mountain ranges (Costilla Co, Alamosa Co, and Saguache Co). Ackerfield (2022) shows one observation from Conejos Co, but that may refer to G. hirsutula var. decumbens, which many experts (and this inventory) give species status. So the photorecords of G. hirsutula from near the Conejos River (2016, 2022) may add Conejos Co to counties indicated in Ackerfield (2022). Allred et al. (2020) show the species present in the Rio Grande drainage as far south as Sierra Co.
