In his revision of Heterotheca (2020), Guy Nesom re-named Chrysopsis floribunda Greene Heterotheca paniculata. This would key out to H. fulcrata var. fulcrata in Semple (FNA). The taxon is characterized by thin and wiry stems producing lateral branches, forming a "loose panicle." Flower heads are relatively small, on short peduncles and subtended by bracts usually no longer than the head. Leaves are small (2-6 mm wide) and glandular. The USA distribution is confined to Colorado and New Mexico. In Colorado, the species is largely west-slope, but Nesom identifies Watershed specimens from Wagon Wheel Gap (1938, 1939), the Great Sand Dunes (1951), Medano Canyon (1973), Slumgullion pass (1974), north of Creede (1989), just west of the old La Veta pass (1987), and 4 miles ESE of Cooper Mt (1999). Marisa Szubryt's 2023 photorecords (iNaturalist observation 188199143) also come from Wagon Wheel Gap. The species should be looked for elsewhere in the Watershed, especially sprawling over rock ledges. In New Mexico, there are records down the Rio Grande drainage as far as Socorro Co.
