- Heterotheca pedunculata (Nesom 2020) will key out in Semple (FNA) as H. villosa var. pedunculata. The taxon is distinguished by its ascending oblanceolate leaves with thin appressed hairs, and lack of salient capitular bracts (vestigial bracts may be present). The species is common in the San Juan drainage, but there are only a few collections from the Watershed: e.g., Lime Creek trail (Mineral Co, 2004); Osier Park (Conejos Co, 2004); and Shaw Lake (photorecord, Mineral Co, 2017, 2022). Nesom (2020, p. 164) also shows Costilla Co. The USA distribution is confined to eastern Utah, northeast Arizona, southwest Colorado, and northern New Mexico. The species follows the Rio Grande drainage only as far as Santa Fe Co, New Mexico. Note that the species is commonly known as Heterotheca villosa var. pedunculata (e.g., Ackerfield 2022). Nesom (2020), in a thorough review of Heterotheca, raised it to species level.
