- In Colorado Artemisia nova is primarily a west-slope plant, but found also on the east slope in North Park and South Park. It has been recorded from Archuleta Co and from Rio Arriba and Taos counties of New Mexico. So its recorded presence in the Watershed, currently minimal, perhaps will be expanded. Currently there are two observations: near Russell in Costilla Co (1966, labeled as "Artemisia tridentata subsp. nova); and south of Hwy 17 in Conejos Co [2022). The second, a photorecord, would add Conejos to counties indicated in Ackerfield (2022) and BONAP (2022). Two crucial characteristics—the dual vestiture of the phyllaries and the green glands beneath the tomentum of the leaves—are hard to show in photographs. In the USA, black sagebrush is common in the Intermountain regions and the central Rockies, sometimes providing forage for livestock. It follows the Rio Grande drainage only as far as Sandoval Co, New Mexico.
