- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Symphoricarpos occidentalis—distinguished from Symphoricarpos oreophilus by its larger, thick leaves and bell-shaped corolla—has been recorded from Costilla Co (Ute Creek, 1934; Sangre de Cristo Creek, 1934; 2 miles E of San Luis,1988), Rio Grande Co (Cat Creek, 2003), and Conejos Co (Rajadero Canyon, 2015). The Rio Grande Co record is not accepted by Ackerfield or BONAP. Western snowberry barely enters the Rio Grande drainage in New Mexico, in Colfax and Mora counties. These Rio Grande drainage locations would lie at the south-central border of the USA distribution, which is Rocky Mountains, northern and central Great Plains, and upper Mid-West.
