- Cirsium tioganum is the current name for Cirsium americanum var. scariosum used to be treated as the acaulescent (stemless) form of C. scariosum (see POWO and Ackerfield 2016). Ackerfield 2022 now treats the acaulescent form as C. americanum, and the caulescent form as C. coloradense (see Ackerfields 's dissertation A Prickly Puzzle, 2020). C. tiogonum has been recorded fairly often from forest edge and meadowy habitats in the montane and subalpine of the Watershed, from the west side of the Valley but not, judging from SEINet records, from the east side. Again judging from SEINet, as well as FNA, the USA distribution is all states W of the Great Plains except for Washington, Montana, Arizona, and New Mexico. The Watershed locations may be the only ones in the entire Rio Grande drainage.
