- Ackerfield allows species status to this fairly distinct Oreocarya, BONAP does not. It has been most often collected in the north Cristos foothills, from the Great Sand Dunes on up through Crestone to the San Isobel Creek drainage. But there are also two recent records from the San Luis Hills E of Antonito (1999) and E of Manassa (2021). The second, a photorecord, would add Conejos to Watershed counties indicated in Ackerfield (2022). Allred et al. (2020) report the plant (as O. suffruticosa var. pustulosa) on gypsum in Santa Fe Co, New Mexico. SEINet has no records of it from Texas. Note that Pam Regensberg (2007), who found the species in the Baca National Wildlife Refuge, classifies it "of special conservation concern."
