- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Pineland dwarf mistletoe has been recorded twice from the Watershed, in 1900 on West Indian Creek, SW of La Veta Pass (Costilla Co); and in 1986, 13 miles S of Del Norte in Rio Grande Co.. Arceuthobium vaginatum is hemiparasitic on Pinus ponderosa, and occasionally P. aristata and P. reflexa. Records might increase were collectors set on looking for the plant. BONAP shows Conejos Co, with no vouchers in SEINet. The USA distribution is Utah, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and west Texas in the Rio Grande drainage. The specific epithet, by the way, derives from the Latin "vagina," meaning "sheath of a sword" or "husk of grain."
