Comments
Viola rugulosa (traditionally called Viola canadensis var. rugulosa), has been often recorded from both sides of the Valley. It is found in shade and wet soil, often near streams or lakes. It is not recorded from the Culebras but no doubt is present there considering the numerous collections from the Cristos of New Mexico. The species ranges across the northern third of the USA from Wisconsin westward to the Pacific coast, with extensions down through the Rockies. (V. canadensis is distributed eastward from Wisconsin and down through the Appalachians.) V. rugulosa follows the Rio Grande drainage nearly to the Mexican border. It is distinguished from V. canadensis mainly by its long rhizomes.
