- Greater red paintbrush has been very frequently collected from all mountain regions of the Watershed, in a range of habitats, including dry and wet meadows, understory of spruce woods, and alpine slopes. The list of synonyms shows that botanists have been vexed with this species, their task complicated with hybridization. The coloration and the shape of the leaves can vary considerable. Castilleja miniata is found in almost all counties of states west of the Great Plains, and follows the Rio Grande drainage through New Mexico nearly to the border with Texas.
