- From the Watershed there have not been many collections of this unusual paintbrush. Nearly all are from the San Juans south of the Rio Grande—with two locations from the east of the Valley, along Hwy 160 northeast of Fort Garland, in 1988 and 2022 (for the second, see iNaturalist observation #125712453). Castilleja lineata is more common in New Mexico—although still uncommon there, according to FNA. In New Mexico it has been collected from both sides of the Rio Grande drainage, although only from the northern third of the state (it follows the Rio Grande drainage no farther down stream). Its USA range is confined to a few scattered counties in the Southern Rockies of Colorado, New Mexico, and eastern Arizona. Note that where it occurs it sometimes forms small colonies. In July of 2022, in a meadow above Lower Beaver Creek campground in Rio Grande Co, some twenty or so plants were observed (photorecord).
