- NEED IN Situ PHOTOS. Although this alpine paintbrush has been collected from the San Juan River drainage of San Juan, Mineral, and Hinsdale counties, the only collections across the Divide on the west side of the Watershed are from Stony Pass and Sheep Mountain. There are alpine locations for Castilleja haydenii from the Cristos on the east side, and one undated voucher labeled only “Conejos.” There are a number of collections from the Cristos of New Mexico, but this distinctive paintbrush is found only in the northern counties contingent with Colorado, not farther south.
