- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. In the Watershed there are less than 10 locations of tufted saxifrage, but from all mountains regions. Saxifraga caespitosa is usually found in alpine rock crevices. It barely enters New Mexico, being collected only a few times from Taos Co. The Watershed locations stand at the southeast corner of the USA distribution, which covers the central and northern mountains of all western states, including the Cascades. Note that Linnaeus spelled the specific name "cespitosa," so that spelling takes preference.
