- Common cinquefoil is fond of rocky outcrops and slopes and other xeric habitats. There are records of Potentilla pensylvanica from all regions of the Valley, except from the Culebras (but collections extend on down the Cristos in New Mexico). The one Lower Basin record is from the Conejos River canyon. The USA distribution covers states west of the Great Plains (but not the Pacific coastal areas) and northern Great Plains (but nowhere near Pennsylvania). The species follows the Rio Grande drainage down to the tip of west Texas (Culberson Co).
