- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. The Watershed has only two records of common buckthorn. The older is from the Adams State College campus (1953). The more recent is from a ranch on the Baca National Wildlife Refuge (2006). Rhamnus cathartica was cultivated as an ornamental shrub and subsequently naturalized in the northern half of the USA. Saguache and Alamosa counties of the Watershed represent its southernmost reach in the Rockies.
