- There are three Watershed vouchers of redroot, all from La Veta Pass, in 1902, 1903, and 1945. And there is one recent photorecord, also from Costilla Co, 5.6 air miles east of Forbes Park, near the top of Wagon Creek (23 Sept 2022, B. Moore, iNaturalist observation 136349263). These locations would mark the extreme SE corner of the USA distribution, which is all states west of the Plains except for Arizona and New Mexico. Ackerfield (2022) does not accept the vouchered identifications. This buckthorn is distinctive by the vanilla odor of its crushed leaves. It also propagates not only by seed but also by layering, in which shed leaves may take root (as with Jasminum and Bryophyllum).
