- Heartleaf butterup is usually collected from montane meadows beside streams, sometimes on drying pond edges. In the Watershed it was first recorded in 1900 from west of La Veta Pass, but since then collections have been from the west side of the Valley. The range of Ranunculus cardiophyllus is largely the mountains of Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico, with isolated occurrence in the Rockies farther north, up to the Idaho panhandle. In New Mexico it extends down the Rio Grande drainage into the middle of the state (continuing no farther down the drainage).
